Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a treatment modality that is based on the belief that we have a core Self that embodies positives qualities in our inner world. As we begin to interact with the external world, we develop sub-personalities, families, or “parts” to protect us from pain or harm, some of which can help us in positive ways. For example, you might have a part that is afraid of failing, so you may strive hard to become successful in life. However, we can have parts that try to take control of our lives and help us in extreme ways that affect us adversely. For example, you might have a part that has learned that emotional eating helps you feel better when you are coping with stressors. Although this part finds a strategy that can help you feel better, emotional eating can affect your physical and mental health negatively.
In IFS therapy sessions, we can help heal and transform your parts by understanding them better and understanding the reasons that motivate their actions. Once we heal and transform your parts, they do not have to be in charge or engage in extreme actions anymore, which can improve your wellbeing overall.
