Many of us have undesirable behaviors that we would like to change. Behavior modification is a treatment modality that can be used to help us replace undesirable behaviors with desirable behaviors. Behaviors can be changed using positive reinforcement (i.e., a child receives a reward for doing his homework), negative reinforcement (i.e., a woman presses a button to turn off her loud alarm clock), positive punishment (i.e., a man touches a hot stove and feels pain), negative punishment (i.e., a child loses a toy after throwing a tantrum), and other behavior modification techniques.
Behavior modification can help treat children, adolescents, and adults with a wide range of problems, including:
- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Enuresis (Bed-Wetting)
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD)
